WHAT IS AUGMENTED CITY?
People build memories of the cities they live in. The memory of a city is built through the history of its habitants which is created through their experiences of events taking place in time and space. This is a never ending process of experience layers in coexistence, establishing themselves as a material and immaterial heritage. Places are therefore given meaning, sense and significance.
The Project entitled Augmented City aims to activate the different memory points through the sharing of the history lived by its habitants in the physical and material space of the city. Through the use of images, texts, sounds and videos, citizens are invited to share their geographically placed and stored memories in cloud computing. This leads to the creation of memory clouds that, once activated, will be reached in augmented reality in the space where they happened, through the use of mobile devices in these geographically located points.
SITE
In order to activate city memory points, users must create an account in the project’s website. Then, he or she will be able to geographically indicate memory points by inserting the specific address desired or pointing out selected places in the map. Once the point is identified, the user will thus be able to store images, stories, sounds, videos and texts related to the memory. All this material will be stored in the cloud server of the Project, thus creating a memory database. As soon as they are approved, memories are activated and other users may visualize and access them in their original geographic point. This way, the project is continually fed by the common interest of sharing urban memories by crowdsourcing system, in which users are responsible for collectively building a city memory database.

APPLICATION
Through a camera and GPS based smartphone app, it is possible to access and visualize informational layers of urban memory in physical space, allowing reality to be augmented and extended in time and space. Once active memory points are identified, the system will recognize the user’s location. If he or she is more than one kilometer away from the point, a map service will direct him or her to the indicated point in the best way possible. If the user is less than one kilometer and more than 100 meters away from the point, the system will generate a walking route. If the user is 100 or less meters away from the point, he or she will have access to the memory point content and will view it through his or her smartphone camera. By gathering visual, audible and readable narratives of those who inhabit the city, the project aims to reestablish traditional city history through its memories.
DEVELOPMENT
The Project Augmented City involves three development and implantation phases. The first one is the implantation of the website, through which users will be able to post and visualize memories, as well as the structure of the database in which these posted memories will be stored and accessed. The second one involves the development of the augmented reality app for mobile devices. The third and last phase is constituted by a series of workshops made possible by the support of public and private institutions responsible for promoting and advertising the Project.
